Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome - www.stowmaries.org.uk
Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome is a vital and intrinsic part of the history of early flight, the Royal Air Force and the Great War. It is a treasured part of our local, regional, national and international heritage. This was recognised by Oxford Historian and Documentary-maker Dan Snow, when he commented –
“This place [Stow Maries] is amazing. We need to do all we can to conserve it and make it the European centre for Great War and Early aviation.”
Dan Snow, Hylands House, Essex, April 2017.
‘B’ Flight was the first Flight of 37 Squadron(Sqn) to take up residency at RFC Stow Maries, 100 years ago. Harboured in canvas tents and with few concessions to comfort, it is only fitting that these early pioneers are now immortalised in a permanent exhibition along with the other members of 37 Sqn that joined them by the heyday of the site in 1918. This work was completed by the same award-winning team made up of SMGWA staff and Volunteers that completed our Engine Workshop Museum, still a hugely popular exhibition.
We now have three permenant museum exhibitions, housed in historic buildings, with a more planned for 2019/20. We have over 150 volunteers, and have rescued 7 buildings from the At-Risk Register through our work.
We have a shop, a Mess, two hangars of aircraft and a great events programme.
What we need DESPERATELY is money to keep going! We need money to pay the bills, save buildings, and save the site.
