About our cause
Supporting Carers and Families Together provides a much loved and valued service for the community, supporting unpaid carers, particularly young carers for over 15 years.
We need your help so we can continue to offer and even expand our service!
SCAFT provides a range of free support services to young carers across Rochford District. We enable them to take a break from their responsibility, socialise and get help and advice.
Although all carers shoulder a massive responsibility, caring particularly disadvantages young people.
SCAFT works with some amazing carers as young as 6, to support them through issues such as bullying, social isolation, emotional wellbeing, bereavement, and educational difficulties. Around 1 in 12 children of school age will be helping to care for someone at home, which could range from physical, mental or sensory disabilities, learning difficulties, mental health, a sibling with a disability, a parent recovering from the trauma of domestic abuse, or those with older age difficulties.
Young carers often achieve way below their classmates academically due to the pressures and stresses of their caring role and are twice as likely to end up without a job, further education place or apprenticeship when they leave school, drastically affecting their future life chances. We are able to provide a support worker in local schools to work with them, relieving stress, raising their levels of achievement and helping them towards a more independant and fulfilling future.
Caring responsibilities also often mean limited opportunities to get out, socialise and be part of the local community so SCAFT provides respite groups for young carers to come along, to take break, have a chat, take part in activities and try new experiences, and receive advice. With many carers suffering from health conditions themselves we encourage an active lifestyle and healthy living and provide learning experiences for useful things like first aid, food safety, moving and handling, as well as a range of crafts and art activities.
SCAFT’s services and staff have received national recognition from BBC Children In Need, The National Lottery Community Fund and been nominated for a number of awards, including the Kings Award for Voluntary Service and the Children and Young Peoples Magazine Awards.
If you are affected by caring issues yourself, or would just like to know more about our work, please visit our website at scaft.org, or contact us on 01268 741811, via [email protected] or our Facebook page.
As we live longer, finding yourself in a caring role is a growing issue for many people, please help us to support young carers and maybe one day we will be able to help you and your family through a challenging time in your life.
Thank you for your support and good luck!
Yours sincerely
Cllr June Lumley (County & District)
