About us

The Royal Association for Deaf people (RAD) is one of the oldest charities working with Deaf people in England.  For almost 180 years, RAD has continually evolved to ensure that it remains relevant to the changing needs of Deaf people, creating opportunities that inspire, develop and empower

Celebrating Deaf culture, language, identity, community, heritage and diversity is an essential part of what we do.  We are proud of our heritage, and passionate about making sure that RAD continues to develop so that it remains relevant to needs and aspirations of Deaf people.

We ensure that Deaf people have access to services in British Sign Language (BSL) and have developed and delivered services that make a real difference to the lives of Deaf people every day.  We also break down barriers by supporting the awareness and accessibility of mainstream service providers.

Deafness is an invisible disability – until a person raises their hands to speak, you may not even know that they are Deaf.  There is a common misconception that BSL is a signed version of English; and that, as such written English is accessible to Deaf people.  BSL, like many spoken languages has commonalities with English; but is a language in its own right with its own grammar, syntax and vocabulary.

The average reading age of a Deaf school-leaver is nine.  Expecting Deaf people to access critical services and information by reading English creates barriers, exclusion and increases the risk to health & wellbeing.

From supporting children and families to helping Deaf people find work, to befriending older people, we are here to make sure the people who use our services get the support they want, when they need it and that it is accessible to them.

Thank you for taking your first step in becoming a RAD supporter.  With your support we will be able to do more to improve the health, wellbeing of Deaf people in Essex.  Together, we can make the future brighter, giving Deaf children the opportunity of a better, more accessible future.

Good luck!
